Defence Industries Minister Martin Hamilton-Smith has been highlighting South Australian capabilities as supply chain partners to global defence firms targeting major Australian defence projects, with a focus on naval shipbuilding and aerospace.
Mr Hamilton Smith has recently visited key defence companies, accompanied by Defence SA Chief Executive Mr Malcolm Jackman and former CE Andrew Fletcher in an advisory role.
The relationship building task encompassed the United States, Canada, Europe and the United Kingdom. Mr Hamilton-Smith also progressed discussions with companies seeking to establish or expand their presence in South Australia, particularly with respect to Land 400 (military vehicles) and naval shipbuilding.
This visit was a timely opportunity to highlight the State’s defence credentials, particularly in the lead up to Land 400 first pass and tender release, along with the development of the new Defence White Paper and Defence Costing Paper. International defence companies are monitoring Australian defence policy and project decisions with significant interest in terms of potential bids and investment.
Mr Hamilton-Smith said “this is a critical time for South Australia’s defence industry and we need a strategic approach to strengthening it into the future.
“Building relationships with key international stakeholders in the defence industry is vital to attract new investors and to create job opportunities that will ensure the benefits of a strong defence industry are enjoyed in South Australia for generations to come.”
Mr Hamilton-Smith met with defence companies including General Dynamics Land Systems, BAE, Northrop Grumman and naval shipbuilder Navantia, which has a significant interest in upcoming Australian naval projects namely, supply ships and the future frigates. Navantia is also the current design partner of the Air Warfare Destroyer.
The Minister also met with Boeing representatives, following the Federal Government’s recent approval to acquire eight P-8A Poseidon Maritime Surveillance Aircraft, which will replace the AP-3C fleet and result in a significant upgrade to the RAAF Base Edinburgh facilities.
The Minister is now in Cairns for the Trade and Investment Minister’s Meeting.
