Veterans’ Affairs Minister Martin Hamilton-Smith has awarded $5,340 funding to the Macclesfield RSL Sub-Branch to help complete the construction of a War Memorial Garden.
Mr Hamilton-Smith said the Sub-Branch is transforming two acres of previously disused land it acquired from the Mount Barker Council. Its being transformed into a remembrance garden and commemoration trail, including bricks inscribed with the names of 350 veterans.
“The Sub –Branch has raised around $40,000 to invest in the garden, which includes a series of memorials, sculptures and artwork, highlighting the District’s history of service in peace keeping missions and conflicts,” Mr Hamilton-Smith said.
“The grant paves the way for the project’s final touches to begin, including installing four steel plate memorials for commemorative services and three flagpoles to fly service ensigns.
“The Macclesfield War Memorial Garden is a fitting way to recognise the sacrifices of South Australian veterans from throughout the District. The garden is home to the town’s commemorative services, and a popular destination for families to honour their forebears.
“The natural garden has also provided a peaceful place of solace for local veterans living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Life after service is a significant challenge for many veterans and their families. It is pleasing to see the positive impact the War Memorial Garden is already having. This worthwhile project will also serve to educate South Australians and visitors to the region about the State’s involvement in our nation’s military history.
“Thanks to a string of successful community engagement programs, membership at the Macclesfield RSL Sub-Branch has increased by 1000% in the past 10 years to 115 veterans.”
Mr Hamilton-Smith will meet with Sub-Branch representatives and local veterans at the Macclesfield RSL in Venables Street, before visiting the War Memorial Garden on Monday 15 September from 4:45 pm to 6:00pm. The War Memorial Garden will be officially opened next year, in time for the Centenary of Anzac.
The announcement forms part of the State Government’s Country Cabinet visit to the Adelaide Hills, the second Country Cabinet this year following the first in the Riverland in June.
A community BBQ and forum was held on Sunday evening in Mount Barker where all Cabinet Ministers heard the issues of concern to local Hills residents.
Premier Jay Weatherill, as part of his agreement with the Member for Frome Geoff Brock, will host three Country Cabinet visit across the State each year.
