A business and government trade delegation of up to 30 people will visit key northern Asian
countries Japan, the Republic of Korea and Taiwan this week.
Minister for Investment and Trade Martin Hamilton-Smith is leading the North Asia Mission
which will be the first government-led trade mission to Taiwan and the Republic of Korea.
It will showcase South Australia’s key sectors of growth to our North Asian counterparts,
highlighting areas of mutual growth and benefit.
The focus will be on trade opportunities in premium food and wine, agribusiness, health,
innovation, defence – aviation and aerospace, manufacturing and investment.
Background
The North Asia region has around 200 million consumers with an appetite for South Australian
produce, such as premium food and wine.
A South Australia – North Asia action plan is currently being developed to establish a
framework for forging closer relations.
The action plan will encourage greater support for South Australian businesses to enter the
North Asia export market, and build international connections and strategic Government
partnerships for more effective engagement.
South Australian exports to the region were worth $1.1 billion in 2015-16, with Japan South
Australia’s fifth biggest export market; Taiwan the 11th biggest and Republic of Korea the 12th
biggest.
Quotes attributable to Investment and Trade Minister Martin Hamilton-Smith
This mission aims to strengthen existing business relationships in Japan, the Republic of Korea and Taiwan through face-to-face conversations, networking events, and business and
Government meetings.
We have a sister-state relationship with south-west Japan’s Okayama Prefecture, and a sister-state relationship with Chungcheongnam-do in the Republic of Korea.
Greater knowledge of trade and investment in this region will boost South Australia’s exports, bring in investment to
South Australia and create jobs.
